A Guide to Spotting Termite Warning Signs in Durham, NC
Termites are masters of stealth. Knowing what to look for can save you thousands in repairs. Here are key warning signs the experts at KB's Pest & Termite Control recommend Durham, NC homeowners watch for:
- Mud Tubes: Subterranean termites, the most common type in Durham, NC, build pencil-sized tunnels from soil, wood, and saliva to travel from their underground colonies to your home's wood. Check your foundation walls, support piers, and crawl space for these tell-tale signs.
- Discarded Wings: After a termite swarm (often in spring or after rain), you may find small, translucent wings on windowsills, near doors, or in spider webs. This is a clear sign that a mature termite colony is nearby.
- Wood that Sounds Hollow: Tap on wooden beams, baseboards, or floors. If the wood sounds hollow or papery, it may be because termites have eaten the wood from the inside out, leaving only a thin veneer.
- Buckling or Blistering Paint: Unexplained blistering or peeling paint can sometimes be a sign of moisture buildup caused by termite activity behind the wall. It may look similar to water damage.
- Frass (Termite Droppings): While more common with Drywood termites, you may see small, wood-colored pellets near infested wood.
- Stiff Windows or Doors: As termites consume wood framing, it can cause warping, making your windows and doors difficult to open or close. If you notice any of these signs in your Durham, NC home, it's crucial to call KB's Pest & Termite Control for a professional inspection immediately.
