A Guide to Preventing Pests in New Canaan, CT Homes
At KB's Pest & Termite Control, we want to help New Canaan, CT homeowners create a less inviting environment for common pests. Most pests are looking for three things: food, water, and shelter. By limiting their access, you can significantly reduce your risk of an infestation.
- Seal Potential Entry Points: Pests can enter through tiny cracks and openings. Regularly inspect the exterior of your New Canaan, CT home for gaps around utility pipes, vents, and foundation cracks. Seal these with caulk or steel wool. Ensure weather stripping on doors and windows is intact.
- Eliminate Moisture and Standing Water: Pests are drawn to water. Fix all leaky pipes and faucets promptly. Ensure your gutters are clean and downspouts direct water away from the foundation. Eliminate any standing water in your yard, as this is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
- Maintain Smart Sanitation Practices In the House: Clean up crumbs and spills immediately. Store food (including pet food) in airtight containers. Take out the trash regularly and keep bins clean. Reduce clutter in basements, attics, and garages. Piles of boxes, paper, and clothing provide ideal hiding spots for pests like spiders and rodents.
- Manage Your Landscape: Keep tree branches and shrubs trimmed back from your house, as these can act as bridges for pests like ants. Store firewood at least 20 feet away from your New Canaan, CT home and off the ground. Firewood piles are a prime location for termites and other pests. Keep mulch beds a few inches away from your foundation.
- Be Vigilant About What You Bring Inside: Check grocery bags, cardboard boxes from deliveries, and second-hand furniture for signs of pests like roaches or bed bugs before bringing them into your home.By following these proactive steps, you can make your New Canaan, CT home a much less attractive target for pests. For complete protection, a professional preventative service plan from KB's Pest & Termite Control is your best defense.
